Joseph Zirker (American, 1924–2022)
Untitled
Cast acrylic monotype
32 × 24 in.
Unique impression
Provenance:
Collection of Michael Rosenthal, San Francisco; formerly Michael Rosenthal Contemporary Art
Zirker's work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Brooklyn Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and received two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Awards. He invented and patented the cast acrylic monotype process and wrote two books on the technique.
Zirker spent nearly seventy years making prints. He invented a monotype process using cast acrylic — pouring acrylic medium onto a surface and pulling a single impression. The result has a translucency and depth that traditional ink monotypes can't achieve. This is a unique work — one impression, unrepeatable.
